MUSIC COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

SYMPHONIC BAND
Grade Level: 9-10

Recommended Prerequisite: A minimum of two years of instruction on a band instrument or by audition and teacher recommendation.

This is a performance-based band class for 9th and 10th grade students or others by permission of the director. Music will be Grade Level II-III musically and will include a wide range of styles from marches to concert selections of various periods of music. Members will perform several times throughout the year and will combine with the Wind Ensemble group for parades and various other performance events during the year. Members are eligible to audition for District III Honors Festivals and the Maine All-State Music Festivals.


WIND ENSEMBLE
Grade Level: 10-12

Recommended Prerequisite: A minimum of four years of band instruction or by audition and special permission from the director.

This is a performance-based group with emphasis on Grade Level III-V which will include many different styles and periods of music. This will be a group capable of traveling to various festivals and competitions, but may be asked to combine with the Symphonic Band for special events and concerts. This group will require strong individual performance skill. Members are eligible to audition for the District III Honors Festivals and the Maine All-State Music Festivals. In addition to local concerts, this group will travel and compete on every uneven year (2007, 2009, 2011 etc…) at a major festival in the United States.


AMERICAN MUSIC
Grade Level: 9-12

Recommended Prerequisite: None

If you enjoy listening to rock music, listening to jazz, or watching Broadway shows, this is the class for you. This class will explore the history of American music and its various styles. A large part of this course will be audio/visual.


BASIC MUSIC THEORY
Grade Level: 9-12

Recommended Prerequisite: None
This course is intended to introduce students to “the basics” of music. It will start “at the very beginning”, recognizing basic music notes, rhythms, instruments, etc. We will progress over the semester to reading and writing music in an exciting setting, with the aid of computers. Other topics which will be covered will be listening to music, learning about various instruments, and appreciating why music is so important to us every day. A portion of this course will be audio/visual.


ADVANCED MUSIC THEORY
Grade Level: 10-12

Recommended Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation.

This course is designed for students who wish to achieve high levels of music theory training to prepare themselves for college entrance exams, composing music or playing or singing music at a higher level. This course will cover concepts of ear training, keyboard skills, music composition and small portions of music history throughout the year. Information learned in this course will be used to improve an individual’s music abilities and move them ahead toward college level work in Music Theory.


PIANO (Semester I)
Grade Level: 9-12

Recommended Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to introduce the basics of piano technique and music theory. Students will learn the basics of playing the piano through music theory and hands on experience. Students will have time to practice and create music in class. This is an excellent class for any student who has additional interest in singing, composition or pursuing music as a future career. Piano skills are a must in the music field!


PIANO: Advanced Study (Semester II)
Grade Level: 9-12

Recommended Prerequisite: Completion of Piano Class I and teacher recommendation.

This course is designed for those students who have passed Piano I and are recommended by the instructor to continue study in piano. More advanced studies in piano technique and advanced repertoire will be covered.


CONCERT CHOIR (Semester I)
Grade Level: 9-12

Recommended Prerequisite: None

The BHS Concert Choir is an excellent class for any student who is generally interested in enhancing their musical skills or who simply enjoys singing. The class will focus on vocal technique, ear training, good rehearsal habits, and vocal performance techniques. This class will explore choral literature of various styles including classical, gospel, pop, folk, and multicultural. Students will be required to perform in several concerts throughout the year. This is an excellent class for the beginning singer. Enrollment for both semesters is encouraged but not required.


CONCERT CHOIR(Semester II)
Grade Level: 9-12

TREBLE CHOIR
Grade Level: 10-12

Recommended Prerequisite: Audition.

The BHS Treble choir is an auditioned Women’s Choir which meets every other day for the full year. Due to the need for a well balanced group, entrance into the Treble Choir is by audition only. Auditions will be held at the beginning of April. Students selected for this ensemble will work on various choral repertoires including genres of classical, jazz, gospel, multicultural, and pop. Techniques of sight reading, ear training and proper vocal development will be covered. Students will be required to perform in several concerts throughout the year at BHS and several events throughout the community. In addition to local concerts, this group will travel and compete on every uneven year (2009, 2011, 2013, etc….) at festivals around the U.S. Dedication and hard work is expected of any student chosen for this ensemble.


CHAMBER CHOIR
Grade Level: 10-12

Recommended Prerequisite: Audition.

The BHS Chamber Choir is an auditioned mixed choir (SATB) which meets every other day for the full year. Due to the need to have a well balanced group, acceptance into this ensemble is highly selective and done through audition only. Auditions are held at the beginning of April. Students selected for this ensemble will work on various choral repertoires including genres of classical, jazz, gospel, multicultural and pop. Techniques of sight reading, ear training and proper vocal development will be covered. Students will be required to perform in several concerts throughout the year at BHS and several events throughout the community. In addition to local concerts, this group will travel and compete on every uneven year (2009, 2011, 2013, etc…) at festivals around the U.S. Dedication and hard work is expected of any student chosen for this ensemble.
